EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is a powerful, evidence based threrapy for healing from traumas and distressing life experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to support the brains natural healing processing reducing the emptional impact of difficult experiences.
EMDR can be helpful for many conditions and presentations. I have a particular specialism for EMDR and you can read more on the dedication EMDR page .
IFS: Internal Family Systems proposes that the mind is made up of different "parts", each with its own thougths, emotions and roles. IFS views that inner conflict and distress comes a as result of different parts of trying (in often outdated and unhelpful ways) to protect you. IFS is based on the concept that there are "no bad parts" and so therapy focuses on understanding and healing those parts rather than suppressing or fighting them.
DBT: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy helps someone manage intense emotions, cope with stress and build healthy relationships. DBT teaches four specific skills sets:
Schema Therapy looks at deeply rooted negative life patterns (schemas) formed from early life expereinces. These patterns develop for understandble reasons, often as a means of coping, but can be unhelpful later in life. Schema therapy can help you to understand patterns of behaviour, recognise triggers, change less helpful patterns of behaviours and relationships and develop more helpful ways of coping and meeting your emotional needs.
ACT: Acceptance and Commitment therapy is aims to help someone build psychological flexibility. This helps you live a meaningful and fulfilling life, even when faced with difficulty. Rather than trying ot get rid of distressing thoughts and feelings, ACTs helps you step back from unhelpful thoughts, connect with what truly matters to you and commit to steps that bring meaning to your life.
CFT: Compassion Focused Therapy helps people reduce excessive self-criticism, shame and guilt. Individuals can learn to relate to themselves in more supportive and balanced ways. This develops our natural soothing system; cultivating inner warmth, emotional resilience and wellbeing.
CBT: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a talking therapy that helps someone manage problems by changing how they think and act. In CBT we explore the connection between thoughts, feelings, behaviours (and physical symptoms) to develop coping skills and positive change.
